Call for BEAVRS Research Grant Applications

BEAVRS is now in the position to restart the funding scheme of research Grants aimed to support original research into the surgical treatment of retinal disorders. Priority will be given to projects that are unlikely to be funded by industry and disorders that have a significant impact on quality of life, but may not be a priority for major medical research funding organisations.

Up to 3 projects and up to £10,000 each will be funded. Criteria for assessment of all applications will include:

• Project: originality, scientific merit of proposal and feasibility
• Person: track record appropriate to career stage
• VR impact and potential for further applications

• The project needs to be based in UK or Ireland

1. Introduction

  1. These Grant Terms apply to all grants awarded by BEAVRS after 1 October 2017.
  2. No terms other than these Grant Terms, and any terms set out in the relevant Award Letter, will apply to any BEAVRS grant, unless agreed in writing and signed by an authorised representative of BEAVRS. Without limiting the previous sentence, no terms in any purchase order or other Host Institution document will apply to such grants.

2. Definitions

In these Grant Terms, the following words shall have the following meanings:
  • Agreement: The Award Letter, together with these Grant Terms.
  • Application: The proposal(s) or application(s) for funding submitted to BEAVRS in relation to the Research.
  • Award Holder: The individual who has responsibility for the leadership of the Research.
  • Award Letter: The letter from BEAVRS to the Host Institution under which BEAVRS awards the Grant.
  • Background Intellectual Property:
    • (a) all Know-how known to the Party at the Research Start Date;
    • (b) all Intellectual Property owned by or licensed to the Party at the Research Start Date; and
    • (c) all Know-how and Intellectual Property not classed as Resulting Intellectual Property.
  • Collaborator: Any person or organisation involved in carrying out the Research other than the Host Institution.
  • Grant: The funding provided or to be provided by BEAVRS for the Research.
  • Host Institution: The university, NHS Trust or other legal entity to which the Grant is awarded.
  • Intellectual Property: Any patents, designs, copyrights, database rights, confidential information and similar rights worldwide.
  • Know-how: Unpatented technical information that is not in the public domain.
  • Maximum Amount: The maximum amount stated in the Award Letter.
  • Net Receipts: Payments received from exploitation of Resulting Intellectual Property, less direct protection costs.
  • Parties: BEAVRS and the Host Institution.
  • Qualifying Expenditure: Costs properly incurred exclusively for the Research.
  • Research: The research described in the Application.
  • Research Period: The period stated in the Award Letter.
  • Resulting Intellectual Property: Intellectual Property created during the Research.
  • Third Party: Any person other than a Party.

3. The Research

3.1 Host Institution obligations

  1. Conduct the Research in accordance with the Application, Award Letter and Grant Terms.
  2. Ensure the Research is led by the Award Holder.
  3. Notify BEAVRS of new research appointments within 30 days.

3.2 Duration of funding

The Grant may not be used to cover expenditure incurred before the Research Start Date or after the Research Period.

3.3 Lapse of Grant

The Grant will lapse if:
  • Appointments are not made by the Research Start Date; or
  • The Research does not begin within six months of the Research Start Date.

4. Payment

  1. The Host Institution shall invoice BEAVRS as set out in the Award Letter.
  2. Payment is without prejudice to BEAVRS’s rights.
  3. BEAVRS may withhold payment if Grant Terms are not complied with.
  4. Payments relate only to Qualifying Expenditure.
  5. Overpayments must be refunded.

5. Reporting, Records and Audit

  1. Records must be kept for six years.
  2. BEAVRS may access records to verify compliance.
  3. Independent audits may be conducted where necessary.

6. Data Protection and Publication

  1. Personal data may be used for grant administration and analysis.
  2. BEAVRS funding must be acknowledged in publications and presentations.
  3. Publications must be shared with BEAVRS.

7. Intellectual Property

  1. Background IP remains with the originating party.
  2. Resulting IP vests in the Host Institution.
  3. Net Receipts will be shared with BEAVRS as defined.

8. Warranties and Liabilities

  1. Information provided must be accurate.
  2. BEAVRS accepts no liability beyond the Grant.

9. Duration and Termination

  1. The Agreement runs for the Research Period unless terminated early.
  2. BEAVRS may terminate for regulatory, staffing or compliance reasons.

10. General

  1. Amendments must be in writing.
  2. English law governs the Agreement.
  3. This Agreement constitutes the entire agreement between the Parties.
